How to prepare for a self-introduction during the interview
An interview will typically begin with a self-introduction. While the interviewer will have quickly looked through your resume, it is still important to be prepared. How can you impress the interviewer with a self-introduction that only lasts one to three minutes? How can you make it different?
1.Reveal the hidden information of your educational background
A common opening for self-introduction might be: My name is XX, I graduated from XX and have a master’s degree in XX.There is nothing wrong with this kind of opening but it is far from ideal. From a HR perspective, he/she wants to hear: My name is XX, I graduated from XX and it was ranked xx in the world. My major was XX and I achieved a first/second upper class degree.
2.Follow the STAR principle to speak about your work, internship or volunteer experiences.
STAR is the acronym for Situation, Task, Action, and Result. What do these words mean in these circumstances?
Situation: What were the circumstances of your work and projects?
Task: What are your duties? Were any specific skills or knowledge required?
Action: What did you do? How did you do? And why?
Result: What was the outcome of your work? What did you learn? Have you completed your objectives? If not, do you know why?
It is ideal to prepare the presentation of your work or internship experiences following the STAR principle. it is also useful to list your strengths. An example of this would be speaking your communication skills, leadership abilities and teamwork capacity from your past experiences. Although the self-introduction is just a short piece of your interview, following the tips above to present your special features and strengths will leave the HR with a good first impression.
